Video: How to Effectively Handle Group Projects

Working with a group on a class project isn't the easiest, but we all have to do it at some point. Get tips on how to successfully work together here!

Whether you enjoy working on group projects or not, we all need to know how to effectively work on class projects with others. Teachers and professors often don’t allow students to pick their partners, so you have to learn to get along with who you’re put with. And group projects (or projects in general) may not be every member’s strong suit, meaning there might be a time when you need to be the leader and make sure everything runs smoothly. When that happens, you’re going to want to know what to do, so student vlogger Isabella has three key tips to help you manage your group and successfully get everything done efficiently and on time.

Top 3 tips for effective group projects

These key tips for group projects are helpful for both high school and college students in not only making for a great project but also developing crucial life skills like communication, time management, and leadership. Here’s what you should do:

1. Define everyone’s roles

Use your teammates’ unique skills to the group’s advantage. If someone is a good artist, have them draw pictures; if another classmate has good handwriting, have them take all your notes. When people have defined roles and specific responsibilities, they’re more likely to get the work done.

2. Communicate often

Explain your ideas, plans, and what you think the best strategy for the project is—but also be open to everyone else’s ideas if they speak up. Being able to communicate effectively will help you contribute ideas to the group, make sure everyone is on the same page, and ensure that everyone feels heard and a part of the team.

3. Make a plan

Make a plan to gather what you need (research, data, pictures, etc.). Having an organized plan will help you lay out everything you need to fulfill the requirements of the assignment, and once you know what you need, you’ll be able to more easily assign roles to each team member.

If you learn to work well with your team and help them stay organized with these tips,  you’ll be finding your way to A+-worthy projects in no time.

I discovered CollegeXpress while embarking on my college search journey as an excited—but scared and way confused—high schooler without a counselor or college-bound sibling to give me advice. Let me tell you, I’m so glad that I stumbled on this community! CollegeXpress helped me find potential colleges and keep application deadlines straight. It gave me a great list of scholarships, and the blogs and emails made me feel like I wasn’t going it alone. Almost three years later and with freshman year of college down, I still love the CollegeXpress vibe so much that I’m writing for them. I’d recommend this site to anyone!

CollegeXpress has helped me explore my views on college in that "why do I wanna go to a certain school" way. It’s helped me explore the best fits in all of these outstanding choices. All these college admission counselors can access my accolades showing them how I could help their college. This source of information helps me show these admission directors who I am and what I'm interested in. Thanks to this platform, my experience for education will be better than most, and I'm so grateful for all that it has provided for me.

CollegeXpress has helped me in many ways. For one, online searches are more organized and refined by filtering scholarships through by my personal and academic interests. Due to this, it has made searching for colleges and scholarships significantly less stressful. As a student, life can already get stressful pretty quickly. For me, it’s been helpful to utilize CollegeXpress since it keeps all of my searches and likes together, so I don’t have to branch out on multiple websites just to explore scholarship options.

CollegeXpress has helped me find scholarships to apply for and look into more colleges. While there are many websites similar to CollegeXpress, every website is different, and I've found a lot of good insight on this website. Receiving emails from CollegeXpress about scholarships is extremely useful, and getting insight about colleges near, far, and anywhere in between helps me narrow down my choices to what I want, which is also super helpful. The articles are always really good reads, and I can't stress enough how helpful this website has been to me. Anything related to college is beneficial to me as a senior, and I have learned lots of useful things to help me on my college journey this year.
