What is the CLEP?

CLEP is the acronym for the College Level Examination Program. CLEP is a College Board program that provides 33 standardized tests on different areas of study. The program includes 2,900 colleges and universities that award credit for qualifying CLEP Exam scores. Read about some real life CLEP success stories from the College Board.

The 33 exams are divided into the following five subject areas:

  • Composition and Literature
  • Foreign Languages
  • History and Social Sciences
  • Science and Mathematics
  • Business

The tests are administered online at 1,700 colleges and cover material taught in the first two years of college. Each exam takes approximately 90 minutes and is primarily multiple-choice. Some exams require essays. The language exams include listening sections.

A big reason to consider taking a CLEP Exam is to save you time, since you can earn up to 12 credits with a satisfactory score on just one exam, depending on the college.

Other reasons to take CLEP Exams are:

  1. Save on tuition fees.
  2. CLEP Exams are just $77 each.
  3. They can help you avoid taking classes you don’t need and allow you to be challenged by more advanced material earlier.
  4. They can help you graduate on time if you’re behind by a few credits.

How to take a CLEP Exam?

  1. Use the CLEP College Search to determine if your college accepts CLEP scores, then contact the admission office.
  2. Decide which of the 33 exams to take.
  3. Make an appointment to take the exams at one of the CLEP test centers.

CollegeXpress helped me on my journey to get to the school of my first choice by showing me all the options I have. I didn’t know of the College of Southern Nevada until I went on this website, and it helped me look for other choices and compare what colleges would be right for me.

I discovered CollegeXpress while embarking on my college search journey as an excited—but scared and way confused—high schooler without a counselor or college-bound sibling to give me advice. Let me tell you, I’m so glad that I stumbled on this community! CollegeXpress helped me find potential colleges and keep application deadlines straight. It gave me a great list of scholarships, and the blogs and emails made me feel like I wasn’t going it alone. Almost three years later and with freshman year of college down, I still love the CollegeXpress vibe so much that I’m writing for them. I’d recommend this site to anyone!

CollegeXpress helped me gain interest in many colleges/universities and many scholarships. I would say the most helpful thing CollegeXpress has done for me is sending me emails that tell me certain types of colleges are interested in me as well as emails about scholarships that I can look at and possibly apply for.

CollegeXpress really helped me by letting me know the colleges ratings and placements. They gave me accurate information on my colleges tuition rates and acceptance. They even let me know the ration between students and faculty and the diversity of the college. Overall they told me everything I needed and things I didnt even think I needed to know about my college and other colleges I applied for.

My favorite part of CollegeXpress is the 800+ lists which have all kinds of hard-to-find information. These lists are helpful when I’m creating college lists, and I also use them to give students a feel for a particular college or university.
